Disclaimer & Disclosure
Full transparency about how TheHowMuch operates, how we make money, and what biases we do and do not have.
Financial disclosure
As of April 2026, TheHowMuch does not generate revenue from advertisements, affiliate links, sponsored content, or paid placements of any kind. The site is funded by its founding team. This disclosure will be updated if our monetization model changes.
No affiliate links. We do not earn commissions when you click links to providers, products, or services mentioned in our articles. All links to external sites are purely for informational reference.
No sponsored content. No article, section, recommendation, or pricing data on TheHowMuch has been paid for, influenced by, or reviewed by any service provider, brand, or company.
No advertising. We do not display banner ads, pop-ups, sponsored listings, or any form of paid advertising on our site.
No paid reviews or placements. When we mention specific providers by name (Firestone, Meineke, Pep Boys, AAMCO, Jasper Engines, etc.), it is for informational comparison, not because they paid for inclusion.
Content disclaimer
Pricing estimates, not guarantees. All costs published on TheHowMuch are estimates based on research from industry associations, published provider rates, government data, and direct shop quotes. Actual prices you receive will vary based on your specific vehicle, location, provider, timing, and the condition of the components being serviced. Our figures represent typical ranges for standard vehicles and conditions.
Not professional advice. Our content is educational and informational. It is not a substitute for diagnosis by a qualified mechanic, consultation with a licensed professional, or a direct quote from a service provider. We are researchers and writers, not mechanics, dentists, lawyers, or any other licensed professional.
No provider endorsement. Mentioning a provider does not constitute a recommendation. Omitting a provider does not constitute a criticism. We mention providers whose pricing and policies are publicly available and relevant to the consumer comparison.
Data accuracy commitment
We take accuracy seriously because our utility depends on it. Here is what we commit to:
Multiple source verification. All pricing data is cross-referenced against at least 2 independent sources before publication. When sources conflict, we report the range and explain the variance.
Quarterly updates. We review and update pricing data quarterly. The “Updated” badge on every article reflects the most recent review date. Between quarterly reviews, we process reader-submitted corrections on a rolling basis.
Correction policy. If we publish inaccurate information, we correct it promptly. We do not silently edit articles. Material corrections are noted at the point of correction. To report an error, email corrections@thehowmuch.com.
Potential biases we acknowledge
No publication is perfectly unbiased. Here are the biases we are aware of and how we manage them:
Consumer advocacy bias. Our content is written from the consumer’s perspective, not the shop’s. We believe consumers deserve transparent pricing, scam warnings, and honest advice about when services are unnecessary. Shops may view some of our content (particularly the “when you do NOT need this” and “common scams” sections) as critical of the industry. We believe this consumer-first perspective is a feature, not a bug.
National chain pricing bias. We cite national chain pricing (Firestone, Meineke, etc.) more often than independent shop pricing because chain pricing is publicly available and comparable across states. Independent shops may offer better value in many markets but their pricing is not publicly accessible for nationwide comparison.
Recency bias in data. Our most recently updated articles have the freshest data. Older articles may contain pricing that has drifted from current market rates. We address this through quarterly updates, but price shifts between updates are possible.
Changes to this disclosure
This disclosure will be updated whenever our monetization model, data collection practices, or editorial policies change materially. We will note the date of the most recent update at the top of this page.
